Ikaika is a place that allows them to let their walls down and step into a judgement free, compassionate, caring, and independent environment. Independent in a sense where they are free to express themselves, to be themselves, to enjoy themselves, and take part in positive and fun experiences, and make amazing memories. It is a place where they thrive. Where the containment of hospitals and clinics fade away. They get to feel the sun on their skin, breathe the fresh air, and the salty air refreshes their spirit. It allows them to live and be who they are... amazing kids/young adults with purpose. They get to see in themselves and in others how resilient they are, how strong they are, and they get to see the warrior spirit in their fellow peers and in themselves. They are reminded that cancer does not define them. This was my son’s second year, and he always comes back with a sense of peace and stillness. I am thankful for Ikaika and the volunteers for their dedication, love, compassion, their purpose, and mission that they’ve taken up to be the positive force for these young adults and teens who have gone through so much. It is because of them that these teens/ young adults strive to look towards the positivity that life has to offer. It is because of them that my son looks past what was and looks at the possibility’s life has to offer. Through Ikaika they rise!!!.”

“IKAIKA allows authenticity and the freedom for the participant to be themselves. We as parents don’t realize how much our children try to protect us- IKAIKA allows them to share things with each other that they may not share with us which is cathartic for them. It is a safe and accepting environment with doctors and nurses who know and understand them- it allows them a safe time away.”

“My most memorable activity was creating the cancer monster. This was really deep and memorable for me because before doing that activity, i never had a way to express how having cancer made me feel and i never fully acknowledged the things that i felt.”

“Talking with another camper who understood me. It was very eye opening to many many things and I am forever grateful for being able to meet/talk with her.” - Participant, Kalaheo, Kauaʻi
